“Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they are yours.” -Richard Bach, Illusions

I was reminded today how we often desperately cling to the stories we tell about ourselves. Even when those stories reinforce false narratives that serve no purpose other than to keep us stuck.

Today a customer came in looking for advice on how to find a job. She was running out of money and was becoming desperate to find work. She wanted to know which crystals and candles she should purchase to help her bring prosperity into her life.

After a brief chat, I learned she had been recently fired from a job that was not bringing her any joy, and that what she really wanted to do was pursue her art. She showed me a few of her portraits, and she was VERY good.

I suggested that with her level of skill, she could easily make a living as a portrait artist. I know it’s possible because I did exactly that in the past. “Oh no,” she exclaimed. “No one is willing to pay me for my art.”

I suggested that there WERE clients out there, but she proceeded to carefully explain to me that she had tried, and no one was willing to pay her price. I said she just hadn’t found the right clients yet, and that her prices were quite reasonable. I encouraged her to follow her heart’s desire.
